Hi Caz, and a Merry Christmas to you too!!

Could to see you posting, is this your first post? Can't really advise, but sympathise with the pain your are in, and problems with walking.

I've had a lot of trouble with my feet over the past couple of years and was diagnosed with RA earlier this year. I complain to my rheumy a lot about my feet as they are very painful, swollen, stiff and walking is difficult and painful. The pain is particularly bad on the ball of my foot, and when resting I experience pains in my toes. My rheumy sent me for an x-ray, which showed that I had a bunion (I couldn't see it!), hammer toes, and a slight erosion to the bones in my big toe on my right foot. I too have been referred to a podiatrist/orthotics, but will not get to see them until March!! In the meantime, I have purchased "Busy Feet" shoe inserts/soles from Scholl, and jelly pads for the soles of my feet, it doesn't get rid of the pain entirely, but has helped to make walking easier.

I think problems with the feet and hands are quite common with RA, and believe particularly in the early stages of the disease that the hands and feet are the first to be affected. Have you had x-rays done of your feet? I suggest that you call your rheumy and ask what s/he thinks is going on.

Good luck,

Love,

Barbara

Hi Caz

Glad to see you back on the forum!

When you have RA, hands and feet are usually worst affected and it could be that you need specially made insoles to help you to walk. An appointment with the podiatrist sounds like a great idea - ideally, everyone who has RA should be seen by a Podiatrist so their feet can be assessed from time to time.

Hi Caz, I also have major probs with feet (even when resting). I agree with everyone that you should ask to see a podiatrist. I also use the Busy Feet insoles as I walk quite heavily on my heels and they have made a big difference.

Hope you get something sorted.

Hi Caz,

Like the others, I suffer badly with painful, stiff feet as well as very painful hands. My hands are worse during the night and splints don't really help this much if at all. Can't suggest anything much to help as they seems to be one of the most common areas to have pain and I have learnt to tolerate it with the help of regular painkillers.

Hi Caz

What you describe with your feet sounds similar to mine - My toes and balls of my feet are painful, and I have stiffness in my ankles, which is caused by Achilles Tendon being tight. It is particularly bad at night and in bed, so have to take extra painkillers some nights. I have been seeing a physio for months now, but things don't seem to get any better. I also saw the podiatrist and had some insoles made, but I can't wear them with all my shoes. I was told to wear trainers round the house, but my feet start to hurt in them after a while.

Now to up your status on the forum you'll have to keep posting, I think if you have posted more than 70 posts you then become an "Advanced"?

hi barbara

i,ve been a mamber for more than 2years now i must have posted more than the 3 times it says--intially i was on every day looking for support when first diagnosed so i've certainly posted a lot more than 3 times!!!!

any way back to feet----i,'ve had to wear walking boots to get around down here safely and boy do my feet really hurt!!!--when we wre snowed in last week hubby and i went for a walk around the village to take in the views --unspoilt snow in the fileds and on the tree branches---beautiful---have a look on his website--fozimage .co.uk---my feet were really painful when i got back and although it took an hour --taking piccies on route it wasn't that far.the ground was fairly even --even with the snow so i'll mention this to podiatry when i go--if the snow--20cm forcast for tomorrow does'nt stop me--i hope not.!
